1. They can work…
Always keep in mind that long-distance relationships can work. Being physically apart doesn’t mean you are emotionally apart.
2. Don’t pretend…
If you don’t think you can handle the situation, be honest to yourself and your partner. Don’t pretend you are happy with the situation if deep down you aren’t. You need to be open about your feelings from the start.
3. Discuss issues…
Discuss any issues you may have with your partner. They aren’t a mind reader and could have absolutely no idea about the concerns you have. Whether you are already in a long-distance relationship or about to start one, you must always talk about your feelings with your partner.
4. Trust is everything…
Trusting each other is vital for a relationship. If you don’t trust your partner, then being in a long-distance relationship will be very hard for you, and will probably result in it failing.
5. Ask, ask, ask…
If your partner is moving away from you, ask them as many questions as you need to before they go. If you are unsure about where your relationship is going, then this is the time to ask. Don’t assume things will carry on as they have been. If you want to stay together, make sure that is what you both want.
6. Regular contact…
Regular contact with your partner is important. Whether you phone them, send a text message, email, write a letter or send a parcel, it will remind your partner that you are thinking of them. When you receive contact from them, you will know that they are thinking of you. Regular contact will make you feel closer to each other.
7. Never make assumptions…
Never assume your partner knows how you feel after a while. If the situation starts to get too much for you, then you need to tell them. Being open and discussing your relationship throughout will help you to get your issues resolved, whether it means finding time to fit in an extra visit.
8. No excuse to cheat…
Being in a long-distance relationship is not an excuse to cheat and is not acceptable in any relationship.
9. Doing the same…
By doing the same activity at the same time can make you feel closer together and give you a special connection. Whether you watch the same programme on television, go to see the same movie or even do the same activity, it can be comforting knowing you are doing the same thing as your partner.
10. Stay positive…
Try to stay positive. Your positivity will rub off onto your partner, so it is important to sound positive when you talk to them. Staying positive will also make the long-distance relationship that bit easier for you to cope with.
